XENICAL

Xenical is a weight loss prescription pill that virtually melts away pounds. Unlike other weight loss pills that suppress appetites and speed up the metabolism from the brain or central nervous system, Xenical blocks a third of the fat in your food intake. Xenical works in your digestive system by attaching itself to lipases and preventing it from breaking down the fat that you have consumed. (Lipases are enzymes in your digestive system that help break down fat). As a result, the undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is excreted. In some cases, Xenical may be taken with appetite supressant prescriptions.

Xenical Uses
Xenical is used with a reduced-calorie diet to help significantly overweight persons lose weight. It also helps to prevent regaining weight previously lost. Orlistat works by blocking some of the fat normally digested by the intestine.

In addition to reducing weight, Xenical reduces :

- high blood pressure.
- the amount of anti-diabetic medication required (if already diabetic).
- triglycerides.
- body fat.
- the chance of developing type II diabetes.

Clinical Efficacy Studies:
Pooled data from multiple trials indicated that weight loss averaged 12.4 lbs. to 13.4 lbs. in patients taking Xenical. Overall 57% of treated patients lost over 5% of their base-line body weight. Those on Xenical showed a decrease in total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (low density cholesterol). This form of cholesterol acts to promote the deposition of fatty plaques along the walls of arteries. There was a concomitant increase in HDL cholesterol (high density cholesterol). This form of cholesterol acts to inhibit the deposition of fatty plaques along the walls of arteries. In international clinical studies with thousands of patients, most individuals using Xenical lost, on average, 10% of their initial body weight over a 6-8 month period.

How to Use Xenical
Take Xenical by mouth, generally three times daily during (or up to one hour after) each main meal that contains fat. Your daily intake of fat, protein and carbohydrate should be evenly spread over three main meals. If a meal is occasionally missed or contains no fat, skip that dose of the medication.

Because Xenical can interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (e.g., A,D,E,K), a daily multivitamin supplement containing these nutrients is recommended. Take the multivitamin at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after Xenical (e.g., at bedtime).

The effects of Xenical may begin as soon as 1-2 days after treatment begins; noticeable weight loss will take longer.

Possible Xenical Side Affects
Fatty/oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, bowel movement urgency, poor bowel control, or headaches may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.

Intestinal side effects (e.g., oily stool) may increase in intensity if you exceed your daily dietary fat allowance. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, digestive disorders (mal absorption or cholestasis), low thyroid function (hypothyroidism), other metabolism problems (e.g., oxalate kidney stones, hyperoxaluria).

Xenical should not be used if you have anorexia nervosa or bulimia-type eating disorders. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using Xenical.
